In class today we compared different liquids and solids. We looked at the different characteristics of each type of object and decided what properties each one possessed. Then, we were given "oobleck," a mysterious material that shared some of the properties of both a liquid and a solid. Our task was to define whether the oobleck was a liquid or a solid. We used our hands and played with it and tested it out. We tried punching it, sticking our fingers in of it, picking it up, and smashing it. After playing with it for half an hour I determined that I was a liquid. It has many properties of a solid but the deal breaker for me was that it took the shape of its container. When we put the oobleck in the beakers it formed to its shape. On a molecular level I think when force is applied to the oobleck the atoms become static and lock up limiting movement. When left alone the oobleck moves freely as a liquid.
