CALIFORNIA INNOCENCE PROJECT
For my internship, I worked alongside the California Innocence Project to help exonerate the wrongfully convicted. During my time there, I worked on cases of possible wrongful imprisonment. I spoke with clients through, phone calls and mail in order to move forward with their cases. Along with this, I wrote case memos and attended trails in order to grasp a better understanding of the world of law.
My project was to take on a case and decide whether it should be opened for further review or closed and rejected. This was a monumental task because I had someone's life in my hands. If they were truly innocent and I rejected them by accident, then they could spend their entire life in jail for something they didn't do. I reviewed all of their case files and ended up writing a lengthy memo and at the end, stated my opinion on how to move forward with their case.
In my internship, I gain real life work experience. My favorite experience, was going up to Riverside to watch the historic exoneration of Kimberly Long. During this time, I was able to study the techniques of professional attorneys. This inside look, helped me to better formulate an idea of what I want to be in the future.
Unfortunately, my work samples are all confidential for the protection of the inmates.
